Unit 1 of my course is a very experimental time, it's ull of rotation workshops and materials that are new to me. My first task was to get used to new mediums such as charcoal, India ink, and photo collage.

Unit 1

I used charcoal, India ink, graphite, and pencil, to create a collage on the architecture seen on Canterbury cathedral. I completed this by using photo collage, and several different mark making techniques including hatching, tonal drawing, and splattering. I used the sides, tips, and edges of the charcoal and graphite and also broke them up into smaller pieces to differentiate the marks more. With the India ink I used a mix of rough sticks and cut pieces of card to mark the page in the ways I wanted, again cutting the card in different ways with different indents to mix up the marks they left.As for my processes, I first let all of my photo pieces fall onto the paper, leaving fate in charge of where they ended up, in the style of Hans Arp, after this I altered some of the photos positions to a more intentional place on the page. After I stuck the pieces down I started to consider how I wanted to fill the blank space, and decided to go for an abstract theme of doorways and ripples.

The reason I used so many mediums and techniques was mainly because this piece was experimental, materials such as ink and charcoal in drawing are new to me and I was excited to see the impact they had on my piece, and I wanted to get a feel for how I can incorporate them into my art style. The theme behind my final piece was memory loss and memories fading. This theme was achieved by the doorways idea, where all arches led to a different place, that can not be achieved in real life, only in confusion. Another thing I did to speak for this theme was leave cutouts in my photos, and fill them in with other mediums, as if someone is trying to piece together a whole picture that no longer exists. The monochromatic requirement fit in well with this piece as it adds to the theme of memory loss.

My next step in this project is to trace 6 small squares from these collages and redraw them, 1 set of 6 in lino, 1 set in colour, and 1 set using pencil for tone. This excersise is to assess my skills in different areas of art.
